LONG STORY SHORT,

My name is Airam, and it is Maria backwards.

My mum name is Maria and she is Fine Artist so she has always thought she had the most common name in the world! So we all call her Maru. My mum’s mum, mi Abuela América had 3 others boys so I have a few cousins. I was the 1st grand-child but Gabby arrived just 2 months after me, thanks God! :-)

I decided to start Chicas Productions while living in France just after completing a 1-year production program in the French film school l’Institut International de l’Image et du Son in Paris. I even got a 22,000 Euros grant from the government so she could attend and complete the program. I learned a lot about producing films and I was ready to begin a new journey.

I later spent great effort trying to get funds for ZAMUROS WAY, a thriller action movie written by Javier Mujica, Vanessa’s dad and that won “Best Script” in Caracas in 2004. In France, the CNC told them that the film was “too commercial” and they would not support it. As I had already spent two years trying to get government support in my two homeland countries, one night I just went online and bought a plane ticket to Los Angeles. I didn’t know anybody there and I had only 1,000 Euros left. But, I just thought that if there is a place in the world where I could find the money to make that movie it would be in the capital of the film industry. While still in Caracas I just starting using Myspace, and wrote to many many people in such of a couch. I also emailed 10 ex-alumni of el Colegio Francia and one amazing Angel with her whole family just invited me to stay in their guest house in Encino. Thank you Valérie!!!! Thank you Paul!!! I flew to California in June 2007 and had a meeting at Lions Gate ten days later. They had just signed a big co-production contract with a Mexican studio as they wanted to produce ten movies in Spanish just for the Latin American market and were very interested and ready to produce her Venezuelan movie in Mexico. Unfortunately, three months into their Latin American venture, and after insufficient marketing expertise and effort, Lions Gate had only brought in three million dollars. As a result Lions Gate gave up and decided that they were not going to produce Spanish-language movies anymore. I was very saddened by this but I learned a lot and realized that this type of thing happens and never to feel defeated.

In Venezuela today the economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food.  Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines.

EVERYDAY we try to help our family joining forces and buying wholesale veggies and fruits so we can share the 700KG between 20 families, so they don’t pay crazy prices because the inflation id out of control. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. My little cousin Adriana still lives with my grand-mother Abuela América.

Venezuelans are trying to get out. And Gabby did it. She left the country as millions of other Venezuelan. She is now in Peru and helping us make this new documentary about Venezuelans today living in a shrinking country.  Now she also has to help us everyday with all the currency transfers headaches because everyday Maduro’s regime is passing a “new” law to prohibit the Venezuelan people who have left to help their families and loved ones left behind. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

Vanessa is actually living and working in Montreal, Canada and offers production services with her husband.
